Springtime in Minden: Events, Activities, and Where to Stay!

Although technically still winter, February gets going with a bang with a benefit concert for Phillip’s Cottage. The concert, Sips and Songs: Stories from the Road, taking place at Corbeau Creek, will shake away those winter blues with live music from Little River Band and Stephanie Calvert (from the 80’s pop group Starship!). Minden Stays host Sara McDaniel started Phillip’s Cottage, a 501c3 organization to honor her later father, Phillip Carroll, and will turn it into a transitional home for women with children who have recently graduated from the Louisiana Teen Challenge Program. VIP experience packages are available at Minden Stays on February  1^st and 2^nd and include brunch with Sara at the legendary Fuller White House and an exclusive meet and greet with the band before the show. February is also the month of the St Jude Auction, an annual event that runs across Superbowl weekend. Raffles are drawn daily, and hundreds of items are also auctioned live! This year, the event will take place February 6-9; a four-day telethon and raffle will be broadcast on the local radio and cable station. Minden’s Mardi Gras celebrations will take place on February 15^th. The event is a free, family-friendly celebration that features a parade, face painting, and shopping. The parade is a showcase of the community’s spirit and culture. The Parade starts at 5pm (line up from 3pm) from Germantown Road and Elm Street. Minden is the perfect place to stay if you go to Gibsland’s Jonquil Jubilee Garden Tour. Taking place on Saturday, March 1^st, the tour celebrates the arrival of Spring in the Daffodil Capital of Louisiana. Enjoy tens of thousands of daffodils along the home and garden tour! Our founder, Sara, will be the featured speaker at this event!

Another wonderful event to look forward to is the Scottish Tartan Festival, on April 11-12. It takes place every April to celebrate the rich culture of Celtic ancestors who arrived in this country many years ago. The festival showcases Celtic music and dance and demonstrates historical trades, martial arts, and games. It’s a fun family and one to mark on your calendar.

On April 12, Phillip’s 5K, a fundraiser for Phillip’s Cottage, will launch its inaugural event.  The 5k will be a great family event with the 5k and a fun run. Strollers and wagons are welcome so the whole family can join in.  Prizes for top finishers and the top runners in various age groups will also be given out on the day. You can book your stay here.

The Trails and Trellises Garden Tour is a beautiful spring event on April 26. Visitors will have the wonderful opportunity to tour four unique and beautiful gardens. Stay tuned to the Piney Hills Master Gardeners Facebook page for more information.

Finally, the Highway 80 Yard Sale is not to be missed. The Historic Highway 80 Yard Sale is a biannual event that takes place in Minden, along Highway 80. The sale includes garage and yard sales, streetside vendors, and booths in antique and thrift stores. This year it will take place on April 25-27.
